Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) will be the guest on Hardball with Chris Matthews, which will telecast live on MSNBC Wednesday, Nov. 20 (9-10 p.m., ET). As guest of the Hardball College Tour, Clinton will play hardball with the inimitable Chris Matthews on a host of issues — from the surprising results of the mid-term election to the current state of the economy. Clinton will also field questions from students at the University at Albany, State University of New York, during the telecast.
Following the telecast, a UAlbany student selected by the college will sit in the Hardball Hotseat for a one-on-one rapid-fire question and answer session with Hardballs Chris Matthews. At the end of the school year, Hardball will telecast a final tournament with the top 10 students from the dozens who have competed on the tour, to determine a Hardball Hotseat winner. The final Hardball Hotseat winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship award plus a $5,000 grant for their college.
Hardball with Chris Matthews, MSNBCs highly rated Washington, D.C.-based series, hits the road every Wednesday this school year, bringing the nations top political and culture figures to college campuses around the country. Previous stops on the Hardball College Tour include the University of Pennsylvania with former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, Chapman University with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, with Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura.
Now in its fifth year, Hardball with Chris Matthews premiered on MSNBC on November 8, 1999, following a successful launch on CNBC in 1997; this past July, it became an exclusive series on MSNBC. One of the highlights of Matthews coverage of the 2000 election was the Hardball College Tour, which featured monthly town hall meetings at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Clemson, University of Southern California, Michigan State, St. Anselm and Winona State University.
A television news anchor with remarkable depth and breadth of experience, Matthews has distinguished himself as a journalist, Washington bureau chief, Presidential speechwriter, congressional staffer and best-selling author.
Matthews covered the opening of the Berlin Wall, the first all-races election in South Africa and the historic peace referendum in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. In 1997 and 1998, his digging in the National Archives produced a series of San Francisco Examiner scoops on the Nixon presidential tapes. He has twice received the Washington Posts Crystal Ball award for his successful predictions of US presidential elections.
Matthews is the author of three best-selling books, the most recent Now Let Me Tell You What I Really Think (2001), a New York Times best seller. His first book, Hardball (1988) is required reading in many college-level political science courses. Kennedy & Nixon (1996) was named by The Readers Digest Todays Best Fiction and served as the basis of a documentary on the History Channel. In addition, Matthews has worked for 15 years as a print journalist, 13 of them as Washington Bureau Chief for The San Francisco Examiner (1987 – 2000), and two years as a national columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle.
Matthews spent 15 years in politics and government: he worked in the White House for four years under President Jimmy Carter as a Presidential speechwriter and on the Government Reorganization Project, in the U.S. Senate for five years on the staffs of Senator Frank Moss (Utah) and Senator Edmund Muskie (Maine), and was the top aide for Speaker of the House Thomas P. Tip ONeill, Jr. for six years.
A graduate of Holy Cross College, Mr. Matthews did graduate work in economics at the University of North Carolina and was a trade development advisor with the US Peace Corps in the southern African nation of Swaziland.
Matthews is married to Kathleen Matthews, award-winning news anchor for the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C. They live in Chevy Chase, MD with their three children.
