MSNBC UPDATE ON ‘AMERICA REMEMBERS’ 9/11 COVERAGE

SECAUCUS, N.J — September 6, 2002 — MSNBC’s “America Remembers” coverage begins on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 8 a.m. ET, with MSNBC’s anchors telecasting from various locations that have special meaning on September 11.

  • MSNBC live coverage will be anchored by Lester Holt at Ground Zero, who will be joined by Forrest Sawyer at the Pentagon; Rick Sanchez in Boston, where two 9/11 flights originated; Chris Jansing who will split her time between Ridgewood, N. J. where many of the victims lived, and Jersey City, overlooking lower Manhattan, and Natalie Morales in Shanksville, Pa, where the fourth hijacked plane crashed. These MSNBC anchors will remain on location through Wednesday, Sept 11.

  • For the four days (Sept. 8-11), MSNBC will feature live interviews, two each hour, with the families of 9/11 victims in the anchor cities. In addition, MSNBC will telecast a timeline of where the hijackers were at various times in the days leading up to 9/11.

  • “Ashleigh Banfield: On Location: Across America” concludes its five-week nationwide tour looking at how America has rebounded since 9/11 to become a stronger country. Banfield reports from The Pentagon on Sept. 9 and from New York City on Sept. 10-11.

  • On Sept. 9 and 10, “Hardball with Chris Matthews” will focus on the war at home and abroad, with guests Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.).

    Wednesday, Sept. 11

    4 a.m. – MSNBC’s live coverage of “America Remembers” begins.

    8 a.m.-4 p.m., ET – “America Remembers” – live news coverage of the major event of the day, anchored by Lester Holt at Ground Zero, who will be joined on location by MSNBC Editor-in-Chief Jerry Nachman, Forrest Sawyer at the Pentagon, Rick Sanchez in Boston, Chris Jansing in Jersey City. Throughout the day they will be joined by MSNBC primetime anchors and hosts: Phil Donahue, who returned to television following 9/11, Chris Matthews in Jersey City, Ashleigh Banfield at Ground Zero, Dan Abrams, who will report on the legal implications of 9/11 as well as NBC News’ Tim Russert and Andrea Mitchell and Ron Allen, reporting from Baghdad.

    4-6 p.m. ET – “America Remembers” – a live simulcast of NBC News coverage, anchored by Brian Williams.

    6-7 p.m. ET – “America Remembers” – live coverage anchored by Lester Holt from Ground Zero.

    7-8 p.m. ET – “Nachman” – Anchor Jerry Nachman reports live from Jersey City, overlooking lower Manhattan.

    8-9 pm ET – “Donahue” – Phil Donahue hosts a gathering of victims’ families, survivors and heroes of the World Trade Center attack.

    9-10 pm ET – MSNBC will provide live coverage of President Bush’s speech followed by a shortened edition of “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” with Matthews providing reaction to the President’s remarks from political leaders and journalists.

    10-11 pm ET – “Ashleigh Banfield: On Location” — Ashleigh Banfield, at Ground Zero, reports on the impact of 9/11 on the younger generation, with surviving parents whose children have been born since 9/11 and the reactions of school children, interviewed during her five week tour across America leading up to 9/11.
