“Get those hands dirty,” as year six of the highly rated, weekly half-hour gardening and lifestyle show Rebecca’s Garden, takes off. Hosted by and named after certified Master Gardener Rebecca Kolls, the nationally syndicated Rebecca’s Garden offers step-by-step how-to’s to inspire amateur and expert gardeners alike as it takes viewers to beautiful gardens throughout the United States. Since 1998, the series has also aired on the Home & Garden Television Network (HGTV).

“As America’s interest in gardening continues to grow, so has Rebecca’s status as a natural, approachable expert advisor,” comments Bruce Marson, vice president and general manager, Hearst-Argyle Television Productions. “She loves what she does, and she tells viewers what they need to know while conveying the fun and satisfaction of gardening. Her expanding audience makes her a personality to watch.”

Research has shown that today’s “baby boomers” are spending more and more time outside, tending their gardens — in fact, the “Flower Power” fifty-something generation is contributing to an explosive growth in the gardening business, to the tune of nearly $30 billion each year. Leading the charge outdoors is Kolls, America’s favorite TV gardener, whose philosophy is that “gardening is relaxing and creates opportunities for personal expression. It can be and sometimes is intimidating, but you just have to do it! My intention is to provide simple ideas and hints to get people started, get them excited and get them outdoors.”

Since the debut of Rebecca’s Garden in 1996, Kolls has gained a widespread following in the gardening community for her practical, step-by-step advice and inspirational ideas for creating beautiful gardens. Her friendly, down-to-earth personal style and “get those hands dirty” attitude have created a winning formula to present the basic how-to information viewers need to become confident gardeners.

Yet Rebecca’s Garden goes beyond the basic elements of gardening tips and ideas, to touch on many factors that are part of the gardening boom.

The series demonstrates the benefits of gardening that reach far beyond the soil! Benefits such as the rediscovery of an individual’s creativity, fresh air, exercise, and the use of garden vegetables and cultivated herbs to create organic and healthy cuisine. The show also offers several ideas for decorating the home such as landscaping, container gardening and crafts made with garden produce. Other topics covered include water gardening, fruit and berries — even growing plants from seeds and much more. A trained meteorologist, Kolls also has a keen store of knowledge that serves to answer questions about climate zones, blooming seasons, plant compatibility and enriching the soil.

The success of the show has generated several spin-off entities including the hardback book Rebecca’s Garden: Four Seasons to Grow On and the interactive Rebecca’s Garden Web site, www.rebeccasgarden.com, which has quickly become a valuable resource for gardening ideas.

Due to the popularity of Rebecca’s Garden, Kolls also serves as the gardening and lifestyle contributor for ABC’s Good Morning America, a position she’s held since January 1999, and periodically fills in as the morning show’s substitute weather forecaster.
