Dateline NBC, the signature primetime broadcast for NBC News, premiered in 1992. Since then, it has pioneered a new approach to primetime news programming. The multi-night franchise, supplemented by frequent specials, allows NBC to consistently and comprehensively present the highest-quality reporting, investigative features, breaking news coverage and newsmaker profiles.
Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips are the principal anchors. The broadcast also features leading NBC News talents Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric and Maria Shriver, each of whom contributes to some of the editions. Dateline NBC also features esteemed, award-winning correspondents including Dr. Bob Arnot, Robert Bazelle, Len Cannon, Victoria Corderi, Ann Curry, Dawn Fratangelo, David Gregory, Chris Hansen, John Hockenberry, Sara James, Hoda Kotbe, John Larson, Margaret Larson, Edie Magnus, Josh Mankiewicz, Bob McKeown, Keith Morrison, Dennis Murphy, Lisa Rudolph, Rob Stafford, Mike Taibbi and Lea Thompson.
The flexibility of Dateline NBC allows for multi-part features, hour-long documentaries devoted to single subjects, as well as a series of continuing reports. The program has brought Americans in-depth coverage of breaking news including the funeral of Princess Diana, the crash of JFK Jr.’s plane, the Columbine shootings, the war in Kosovo, the crash of an Alaska Airlines plane and the crash of the Air France Concorde. Dateline NBC has presented several acclaimed hour-long specials such as Tom Brokaws The Promised Land, a report on American immigration policy and the detention of asylum-seekers, and Web Of Hate, a look at how the Internet has become a catalyst for hate crimes in America; John Hockenberrys For Whom the Bell Tolls, a report on corporate layoffs in America; Sara James The Long Journey Back, a report one familys grief since the shooting at Columbine High School; and Maria Shrivers Checks and Balances, an examination of Wisconsins welfare reform program.
Dateline NBC has made headlines with reports that included John Larson’s award winning investigation into medical insurance fraud, which prompted the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to launch its own investigation into State Farm Insurance Company; Ann Currys exclusive interviews with Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey, parents of the worlds only living septuplets; a report on whether the crash of Alaska Airlines could have been prevented; Stone Phillip’s investigation into sudden acceleration in Ford Motors cars; and Chris Hansen’s hidden camera investigation into puppy mills.
In the 2000-2001 season, Dateline NBC was honored with a number of distinguished awards for excellence in journalism, including three Emmy Awards, four Edward R. Murrow Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award, an Alfred I. Dupont Award, five American Women in Radio and Television Gracie Awards, a National Headliner Award, five Clarion Awards, A Sigma Delta Chi Award, and an overseas Press Club Award.
