NEW YORK — December 17, 2002 — According to Nielsen Media Research data, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw was the No. 1 network evening newscast, winning the week of December 9 – 13, 2002 in all categories. Among total viewers, Nightly News was top-rated, averaging 10.903 million viewers, a 4% advantage of ABC World News Tonights 10.518 million, and a 30% lead over CBS Evening News 8.400 million. Nightly News has now been the nations most-watched newscast for 19 of the last 21 weeks. In addition, Nightly News widened the gap over ABC by 425,000 viewers season-to-date, compared to a 166,000-viewer lead during the same time period a year ago.
In homes, Nightly News was also No. 1 with a 7.7 rating and a 15 share. ABC followed with a 7.4/14 and CBS had a 6.0/11.
Among women, men and adults 25-54, the Brokaw-anchored news program outperformed the competition in all categories. Specifically among younger viewers (adults 25-54), Nightly News posted a 3.3 rating, a 10% advantage over ABCs 3.0, and a 57% lead over CBS 2.1 rating. Nightly News has now topped ABC and CBS in younger viewers for 63 straight weeks.
