NBC BROADCAST DELIVERS 58% MORE VIEWERS THAN ABC, 59% MORE THAN CBS AND 204% MORE THAN FOX

RACE FOR SECOND PLACE NOW EXTREMELY CLOSE

NEW YORK — January 2, 2003 — According to Nielsen Media Research data, “Meet the Press with Tim Russert” easily dominated the Sunday morning public affairs competition in all categories for the fourth quarter 2002. For the quarter, “Meet the Press” was the nation’s most-watched political discussion program, averaging 4.290 million viewers. The race for second place tightened up with ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” attracting 2.722 million viewers, just 17,000 more than CBS “Face the Nation’s” 2.705 million, while FOX’s “News Sunday” averaged 1.413 million. The Russert-moderated broadcast has now placed first in total viewers for 21 consecutive quarters, which represents the program’s best showing since at least 1980 (as far back as NBC News research records go).

In homes, “Meet the Press” was also No. 1, posting a 3.3 rating and a 10 share. ABC and CBS tied for second place with a 2.1/7, and FOX was last with a 1.1/3. “Meet the Press” has now placed first in homes for 21 straight quarters.

Among the key demographics women, men and adults 25-54, “Meet the Press” was top-rated across the board. CBS placed second in all categories, ABC was third, and FOX was fourth. Specifically among younger viewers (adults 25-54), “Meet the Press” had a 1.2 rating, a 50% advantage over CBS’ 0.8, a 71% advantage over ABC’s 0.7, and a 140% lead over FOX’s 0.5 rating. “Meet the Press” has now placed first among women 25-54 for 39 straight quarters (including two past ties with ABC), first among men for 26 quarters (one tie) and first among adults 25-54 for 34 consecutive quarters (four previous ties with ABC).
