‘NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH TOM BROKAW’ CONTINUES TO OUTPACE ABC AND CBS

NEW YORK — January 14, 2003 — According to Nielsen Media Research data, “NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw” continued to dominate the network evening news competition, outperforming both ABC and CBS in all categories for the week of January 6 – 10, 2003. For the week, “Nightly News” averaged 11.461 million total viewers, 712,000 more viewers or a 7% advantage over ABC “World New Tonight’s 10.749 million, and 2.4 million (26%) more than CBS “Evening News’” 9.107 million. This marks “Nightly’s” highest rated week (when all three nets were at full coverage) among total viewers since the week of February 18, 2002 (the winter Olympics). “Nightly News” has now been No. 1 for 14 of the past 16 weeks of the season.

In homes, “Nightly News” was also top-rated, posting an 8.0 rating and a 15 share. ABC followed with a 7.5/14 and CBS had a 6.4/12.

Among women, men and adults 25-54, the Brokaw-led newscast was No. 1 across the board. Among younger viewers (adults 25-54), “Nightly News” had a 3.6 rating, a 13% advantage over ABC’s 3.2, and a 57% lead over CBS’ 2.3 rating.
