–Belmont Stakes Day Special on Saturday June 8th —
NEW YORK — June 5, 2002 — On the track where legends are born, rivalries tested, and records broken, the tradition continues. WNBC presents extensive coverage of the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel in the Triple Crown, on Friday June 7th and Saturday June 8th.
On Friday June 7th, WNBCs popular morning team, Jane Hanson and Maurice DuBois, will anchor Today in New York directly from Belmont Park and will be joined by NewsChannel 4 reporters Chris Cimino, Otis Livingston and Joe Avellar. Among the segments planned, Maurice DuBois learns to ride a thoroughbred race horse.
On Saturday June 8th, Today in New York will broadcast at a special time beginning at 7AM through 8 AM, live from the Belmont Track. Hosted by Walter Perez, and joined by Otis Livingston and Audrey Puente. the program will highlight some of the excitement that precedes one of the most prestigious horseracing events of the year.
And, just before the thoroughbreds prepare to take their positions, WNBC will also offer a live half-hour Belmont Stakes Day Special beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Hosted by sports anchor Len Berman, the program brings it all together for racing fans. Sports anchors Otis Livingston and Bruce Beck will offer insights surrounding the history of the Belmont Stakes, a look at War Emblems bid for racing history, as well as other horses who have come close to winning the Triple Crown, but failed to win the Belmont. In addition, we will televise the 4th race of the day, the WNBC Stakes.
NewsChannel 4s 6pm newscast will air immediately following the Belmont, with Bruce Beck reporting live from the track with final results and the triumphant winners.
