EMMY REVISION/’THE WEST WING’ NOMINATED FOR 22 EMMYS
Published: July 18, 2002

photo preview / download Editors: Please note that NBC’s “The West Wing” received 22 Emmy nominations this morning, not the 21 reported by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Not included in the original tally was the fact that the series was nominated for Outstanding Special Class Program for the episode titled “The West Wing: Documentary Special.” Thanks in advance for making this correction.

NBC CLEAN SWEEPS COMEDY SERIES GUEST STAR CATEGORY

BURBANK, Calif. — July 18, 2002 — NBC, the all-time leading Emmy winner since the inception of the award, has entered its third decade of nomination dominance by capturing 89 nominations in the 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards to again lead all broadcast networks, it was announced this morning by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences from their North Hollywood, Calif. Headquarters.

“For 53 years, NBC has been the overall Emmy Award leader and we are honored with today’s nominations,” said Jeff Zucker, President, NBC Entertainment. “NBC’s banner year last season was largely due to the creative efforts of our classic primetime comedies and dramas as well as our number-one late-night programs. It is gratifying to be surrounded by such a phenomenal group of talented people who have helped NBC reach the top-rated position in all dayparts. On behalf of Bob Wright, Andy Lack and everyone at NBC, I congratulate all the nominees and eagerly look forward to NBC’s exclusive broadcast of the primetime Emmys on September 22.”

Leading NBC’s tally is two-time Outstanding Drama Series, “The West Wing,” which earned 22 nominations, an increase from the previous two years in which the series scored 18 nominations each year. In addition to another nod for Outstanding Drama Series, “The West Wing” nearly clean-swept all performer categories with nominations that include past winners Allison Janney, Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford. “The West Wing” was also nominated in the Outstanding Special Class Program category for its documentary special.

Former Outstanding Comedy Series “Will & Grace” again became the top-nominated comedy series with 13 nominations, increasing its count by one for each year it’s been eligible. Previous winners for Supporting Actor, Sean Hayes, and Supporting Actress, Megan Mullally, are nominated again in their respective categories and Debra Messing landed her third consecutive nomination as Lead Actress. Ten-time winner James Burrows earned his 35th directing nomination.

“The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” a 1995 winner for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series, is again in the running in that category as is 17-time Emmy-winning “Saturday Night Live.” Also in late night competition, “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” which picked up its seventh consecutive nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program, will be looking for its first Emmy in that category.

Three-time winner for Outstanding Lead Actor, “Frasier”’s Kelsey Grammer, picked up his 15th overall nomination and three-time winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor, David Hyde Pierce, grabbed his eighth consecutive nomination. The series, with nine nominations, edges very close to becoming the most Emmy-winning series of all time. It currently has 27 Emmys, just two behind “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

The Opening Ceremony for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games rang up eight nominations including Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special, Directing, Art Direction, Choreography, Costumes, Lighting Direction, Music Direction and Sound Mixing.

The 54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be televised live from the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium Sunday, Sept. 22 on NBC.
